This article will give you a basic understanding of what the term "Matrika" means. The word matrika derives from the Sanskrit term for mother which implies that these texts, written in Sanskrit, were viewed as supplements to the Rigveda. Most texts fall into one of five categories: (1) hymns and prayers (2) eulogies and festivals (3) ancient lore like astronomy and crafts (4) history and chronicles (5) mantras. The first three categories make up about 80% of these texts; they were primarily composed during the Vedic period. The remaining 20% are dedicated to historical works such as chronicles, travelogues, genealogies, etc. The "Shatapatha Brahmana" is a major work in this last category. Most of these texts have been transmitted by way of oral tradition. While the core text, composed in an older language, would be memorized, additional information was added to it by subsequent generations in order to keep the text relevant. It is likely that the composition process continued well into the Common Era when there was a decline in the popularity of Sanskrit texts and when many of these texts were written down for the first time.A misconception about these texts is that they consist solely of mantras and incantations meant for magical purposes. This is not the case. As described above, these texts were very much valued for their historical and cultural information. While no doubt some of these texts were used for magical purposes, most were used to learn the tenets of Vedic culture.
